LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are the odds for the 1st day of matches. Please make sure that you post at least two tips (from two different matches) and a maximum of four tips - along with your rationales. Also remember to post the number of units you are staking on each selection. Tips must be posted before the start of the first game of the day. This is expected to be at 7pm Sydney time on Sunday 27th May. (9:00 GMT?) The thread will be locked at this time and no tips be accepted thereafter (even if the match you want to bet on hasn't started).

To help make it manageable, please only make one post in here and keep match and player discussions in the tennis forum.
If you need a refresher on the competition rules/guidelines or rationales, please click here for rules and here for rationale guidelines.

*Note that everyone is starting out with 1000 units today.

*Note that you can find out what time individual matches start by checking the daily schedule on the French Open's official site. It is located here.

*Note that the set-betting option will not be offered for every match because the odds simply are not available. The set options are listed with the winning player's surname followed by the number of sets won and lost, with the odds in parentheses at the end of the line. For example, if you pick Federer to win in straight sets, the option would be: Federer 3-0 (1.75).

*Note also that LATE entrants will be accepted for 5 more days, and will have 650 units to start.

Important Note: I know it's late notice, but PLEASE try and tip only games for today.. the sched was released late so odds were posted up earlier. Those who bet on games for tomorrow, please change them IF you can. If not, I'll require an additional minimum tip tomorrow. Ex: If you bet on 2 games today which are tomorrow, you have to bet on 4 games tomorrow.

Early entires:

"W.13"
Hello,
Unfortunately, I won't have a possibility to post my tips later. Here are my tips and I hope they'll be included into Competition:

MASSU to win against Horna / 999 Units
Nicolas Massu and Luis Horna are the players that know each other
very well, as they have played 5 times against each other. Massu won
4 matches while Horna - just once. Massu ranks in the 49th position
in ATP rankings, Horna - 82nd. I expect Massu to win this match, as
his results look better in almost all categories.

MOYA to win against Seppi / 1 Unit
Carlos Moya stands 26th in ATP rankings, his opponent - Seppi - 94th.
Moya started playing as a pro in 1995, while Italian turned pro in
2002. Spanish player has much more experience and should win the game against Seppi without problems.

"umcroat"
i'm also going to post my pics for tomorrow in here because play starts at 5am EST and i won't be awake when you post the odds

500 units on NA LI
Na Li is a powerful player who has fought her way into the top20. While clay is not her best surface, she will make it past a very out-of-form Kloesel in straight sets without many problems. I watched Kloesel play in FED Cup and she is playing with no confidence.

500 units on ALEKSANDRA WOZNIAK
Wozniak is one of the most promising juniors to recently turn pro. She had a very good showing in Morocco. While Harkleroad has a lot more experience at this level, she is another player far from her peak. While she may trouble Wozniak with her consistency, I think that Wozniak is too strong for her right now.

"yakir19"
two pickes of today's games:
**Ljubicic - Clement-1-500 unites
I know plenty of people will try Clement but not me, i simply dont see him stand much chance here. He doesnt do well on clay. He doesnt have a good serve, and he will have problems holding as i see no clear advantage for him from the baseline.
I wouldnt say odds contain value but I cant see Clement winning here- in fact the only thing going his way is the crowd and the Central court- i dont expect it to be enough.
Ljubicic has won 5 matches in a row (5-2 overall) against this guy so he is pretty confident about the matchup.

**RRH- Wawrinka -1-500 unites
Simply because I think Wawrinka cant be consistent enough to beat a player like RRH in best out of 5. I saw Waw. recently and he need a lot more matches to get back to the form he was in before the injury. RRH is a rather boring player to watch with his long passive baseline rallies but its the game that I think will suite Waw. the least right now.
Maybe Im wrong but RRH is a big favorite here despite the fact he is out of form.

500 Units @ 1.455 on James Blake over Karlovic

Blake is not much of a clay court player but he seems to be getting a bit better. He made it to round 3 last year and had a very good shot after losing in 5 to make it further. I don't expect him to be around much longer this year but I see him getting by Karlovic. Sadly he is probably the U.S.'s best chance at making any noise as the Americans just don't play well on clay and especially at the French Open. Karlovic has only played half the amount of games as Blake this season and has gone out in round 1 his last 2 times out. The tallest player in the ATP has a big serve and will hit his share of aces but I'm hoping Blake can overcome.

500 Units @ 2.610 on Andy Roddick over Andreev

I didn't understand the odds here until I looked into it more. Roddick is not very good on clay and just flat out sucks when it comes to the French Open. While you would expect a player to want to win a tournament Roddick is shooting to make it to week 2 or the 4th round. At least he's setting somewhat realistic goals seeing as he only has 2 wins in the last 5 years which include 3 first round exits. His power might be negated on clay but I'm taking my chances that he comes out ready to play with some sort of a plan to at least not embarrass himself and the odds are nice to.

All bets are one unit ($50) unless otherwise noted.

N. Lapentti to beat A. Peya - 500 units

Nicolas Lapentti is a great example of a player who is past his peak and is just chilling and waiting for his retirement in the latter stages of his carreer. He played in Hamburg for the first time in 12 weeks were he lost to Hernych with 6-1 6-2. The only clay win thusfar this year for the Czech player.Peya isn't a clay specialist but is a decent player. He has a 4-7 record this year but has been playing some matches and has more rhythm than Lapentti. He had a good match against Roddick in Portschach, just losing 6-4 7-5 and this match is about 55-45 in the advantage of Lapentti I reckon.

R. Ramirez Hidalgo to beat S. Wawrinka - 500

Ivo Minar - 50 Units @ 6.440 to beat P. Starace
Starace has been in good form during the clay season beating the likes of Gaudio and Ferrero and reaching the final in Valencia whilst Minar is coming back from an injury and will be hes first appaerence an Roland Garros. Despite this, I think Minar can cause an upset. Starace has lost in the first round of the last eight Gran Slams he has entered. This suggests he is vulnerable over five sets and since Minar will make him work for every point, he may struggle. Minar in 5.

J.M. Del Potro - 25 Units @ 36.000 to beat R.Nadal
I know Nadal will most likely win, but he generally dosnt play his best tennis in the early stages of tournaments. Del Potro is a quality player and this is his best surface. This will be a huge chance to make a name for himself and some players play there best against the best players.
This is a danger game for Nadal but i still think he will win in 4 or 5, but i had to have a go at thos odds.

T. Pironkova - 50 Units @ 21.000 to beat S.Williams
Williams is like a train, she takes a while to get going but once she gets some momentum, she is unstoppable. She has a habit of going out early in tournaments. I havn't heard much about Pironkova, but considering she has a eastern european sounding name, she must be good on clay, whilst it is Serenas worst surface. Im predicting Pironkova to upset the S-Train and her gigantic thighs in 3 sets.

F. Santoro - 75 Units @ 4.950 to beat J.I.Chela
Santoro will be playing in front of his home crowd for one of the lasts times. He will have overwhelming support and he usually lifts for big occasions. It is his best surface and has a good record against players who stay at the back of the court. This could be a lengthy match and Santoro should be to clever for Chela on the clay courts. Santoro in 4

350 units on Shiavone to defeat Meusburger @ 1.376.

Fracesca Schiavone is a former Q/Finalist here in France, and is ranked within the top 30 players in the world right now. She has never lost in the first round here, making it to the 4th round every year since 2004. Last year on tour she defeated players of the calibre like, Clijsters, Vaidisova, Kuznetsova and Mauresmo.
Meusburger has failed to win a grand slam tournament singles event, losing both her first round appearances so far.
Schiavone should win in two.

220 units on Gaudio to defeat Gicquel @ 2.1.

Gaudio is a former winner here, and has safely negotiated the early rounds here in the last 5 years. Although yet to set the tour alight so far in '07, he performs best here and looks tremendous odds.
Gicquel's performance in Hamburg (losing 1-6, 0-6, to Gilles Simon), has me believing he is not in the form required to make an impact here.
Gaudio to win in 4 sets.

M. Safin to def. F. Vicente - 990 Units @ 1.177
Vicente had a 0-3 record on ATP events. He is up against a veteran in Marat Safin who has the grand slam experience to deal with his lesser opponent. It will take a big effort from Vicente to take 3 sets off Safin and I cant see him doing it. His last ATP match was a loss to 208 ranked Ivo Minar in straight sets. That really says it all. Safin's form has not been great either, but he has shown he can play with wins over Massu and Niemenen. Safin in 3-4 sets.

T. Pironkova to def. S. Williams - 10 Units @ 21.000

I remember Pironkova from her first round upset against Venus Williams in the Australian Open. I think 21.000 is good value for her today. She showed she has been playing decent tennis last week where she made Maria Sharapova struggle. Serena has just returned from injury and is definitely not 100%. She's most vulnerable early on, so I will take
a small risk and go for Pironkova.

R. Soderling 1.429 400 units

Soderling has beaten a lot of big names this year, including Ginepri, Davydenko, Santoso, Hrbaty, Ferrer, and Baghdatis to name a few. He has been above average on clay, making it to the quarterfinals of Monte Carlo before losing to Berdych in 3 sets. He also beat former French Open champion Gaston Gaudio 6-0, 6-1 at Open SEAT.

G. Monfils 1.543 600 units

Monfils is one of the upcoming stars of tennis who will try to challenge Federer in future Grand Slams. Recently, he made it to the finals of The Hypo Group Tennis International, beating notables such as Hewitt and Roddick in straight sets. His opponent, Olivier Rochus, has struggled on clay this year, winning only one match on the surface. In Rochus' 6 years on the tour, he has never made it past the 3rd round of the French Open. Monfils made it to the 4th round last year.

Edited due to tips being on day two

100 Units on P. Starace to defeat I. Minar @ 1.166

I think this one speaks for itself. Starace has had more experience at the higher level and certainly played a lot more tennis this year due to Minar's injury. This is also Minar's first French Open.
Starace on the other hand shows a lot on clay and should be able to comfortably put his opponent away.

500 Units on M. Youzhny to defeat J. Hernych @ 1.132

All signs point towards a Youzhny victory here. He is number 15 in the world compared to Hernych's 92 and in a general sense it has taken much better players to beat him this year. He's not quite in the upper echelon of players, but he is a guy you can depend on to dispose of those who aren't as skilled.

Fernando Gonzalez 200 units to beat Radek Stepanek

I think Fernando is going to win this match because he is top five and he's playing very good on clay since he reached the final in Rome, so he will win this match. Besides, he defeated Stepanek on clay in Dusseldorf 3 years ago and Stepanek has not played good this year (single record 8-11) and he has not had good results on clay this year.

Igor Andreev 100 units to beat Andy Roddick

I think Andreev is going to win this match because he has better results on clay this year than Roddick, he has defeated two times this year Fernando Gonzalez on clay and he defeated Roddick in the last match they played; besides, Roddick has never played well in Roland garros (he lost in the first round last year) and clay is not his best surface.

500 units on J. Benneteau to defeat C. Berlocq @ 1.352
Benneateau is in a class above Berlocq's in terms of ability. He has already shown he can perform well on clay, with a sold 3-4 record and an overall 11-13 record. Berlocq performed decent to start the year but has struggled as of late and lost his last two clay matches. Benneateau has a killer serve and tons of experience, and I expect him to advance without much struggle

500 units on M. Youzhny to defeat J. Hernych @ 1.132
I'd be surprised if Youzhny lost more than a few games in this match. He is ranked 17th in the world and has a tremendous record 26-11, 7-4 on clay. These two met earlier in the year on hardcourt and Youzhny triumped rather easily in straight sets. Hernych has lost the only clay match he has played in this year and I fully expect he will lose this one to the great Mikhail Youzhny

Unit = $50

Since 4/10/06
NBA (including Playoffs): 18-6 (+19.5 units)
MLB: 23-11 (+8.5 units)
Tennis: 10-1 (+24.0 units)

J. Henin 1.025 -> 900 units

The Belgian world #1 Justine Henin has won the tournament in Roland Geros three times in the last four years. So she is the top favourite this year, too. She is also in a very good form this year winning the tournament in Warsaw and reaching the finals in Hamburg.
Henin didn't play on the tour against world #65 Elena Vesnina from Russia so far, but everything else than a straight sets win for Hennin would be a very big upset here.

R. Federer 1.019 -> 100 units

The Suiss #1 Roger Federer is looking for his first ever French Open title and he looks very well prepared. He just beat his big rival Rafael Nadal for the first time in the finals in Hamurg ending Rafas 81 match winniung streak on clay. He didn' face Michael Russel before, but the American World # 68 does not seem to be a real opponent for the Suisss with his 3-4 record on clay this year.

Great to be involved again in the best competition on the net!!

My tips...

T. Robredo 1.121 to beat S. Roitman 8.450 - 20 units

Tommy is one of the better members of the Spanish Armada. A real clay court specialist with a clever serve and a wiked topspin forehand. The Argentine is inexperienced and will not be able to stay in the rallies with Tommy.

C. Moya 1.267 to beat A. Seppi 4.450 - 500 units

Carlos is another Spanish king of clay. He had a a great Aussie Summer of tennis and made the semi at Hamburg, losing to Federer. Seppi is no Federer, needless to say. The italian has had an ordinary start to the year, and I don't think he's been beyond the second round. The Moya forehand will dominate this match.

Best of luck to all - fantastic comp!

G. Monfils 1.543 to beat O. Rochus 2.740 - 50 units

Monfil is a rising star. He had a great Australian Open but his style of play is better suited to clay. He likes to play very deep and use is slingshot power to great effect. Rochus is a clever player but will not have the power to hit past the super quick Monfils.

D. Nalbandian 1.206 to beat H-T. Lee 5.450 - 50 units

The Argentine is a very consistent Grand Slam player. He is very good on all surfaces but I think he is best suited to the clay where his modest serve is very effective. While his form this year has been solid but not spectacular, I am not concerned. He will be at his peak for this match. Lee is not experienced enough on clay to casue him problems.

Seeing as I am a mug when it comes to Tennis, I made both my selections based on higher priced favourites.

I. Ljubicic 1.461 to defeat A. Clement for 500 Units
I read in an article that Ljubicic has won the past 5 in a row against Clement, seems like a good pattern to me, so Ill bank on history to continue.

T. Obziler 1.840 to defeat M. Czink for 200 Units
No idea about this one, purely for price with this pick Dunno

500 Units....Safin over Vicente
I think Safin will overcome vicente easily as I believe in this open Safin will go far.

250 Units J.C.Ferrero over Delic

Spaniards have traditionally performed better on clay and I believe that Ferrero will prove thi strue as he is one of my bets clay players and will reach the latter stages.

My 1st bet for day 1:
N. Lapentti 400units @ 1.481

He's currently ranked #65 and going up against a player ranked 98 and he's got a lot more games under his belt.
So far this year he hasn't done a whole lot compared to in the past, currently with a 3-3 singles record so far this year which isn't too great, but he's going up against someone far less experienced in Peya. He's 14-28 in his career and only 3-5 this year, so for the $1.48 odds I like Lapenti's chances of getting through to the next round at this early stage, he's a former #6 ranked atp player and it would be an upset for him to go out in this one.
you can see just from their career earnings he's accomplished far more on the court Thumbs up

My 2nd bet for day 1:

I. Ljubicic 500 units @1.461

Playing much better tennis at the moment, he's 24-11 this year compared to Clement's 10-12 losing record. All time he's 5-2 vs Clement and also a few years younger. Currently ranked #7 compared to #45 for Clement.
Based on his much better form and also the fact that he's got such a good record against him, I think Ljubicic will improve to 6-2 all time vs Clement after tomorrow, and this bet will return 730.5 units, which I think is a decent profit for what I consider a relatively safe bet.

I. Ljubicic - 500 Units @ 1.461 to beat A. Clement

I think that this tournament will all players play very hard, they will give maximum of their skill. And Ljubicics skill is simply better, his season won/lost is 24/11 and that is great. Clement has 10/12. H2H is 5-2 for Ljubicic, and I dont believe that great player as Ljubicic is can go out in first round

Tipsarevic - 500 Units @ 1.461 to beat Vemic

This will be fight of two serbian players and friends. H2H is 2-0 for Tipsarevic, but only in Challengers or Futures, and 5 years old. But now, Tipsarevic is still better player. On challengers he is playing great this season, he won challenger in Zagreb this season. I think this will be hard match for both players, but Tipsarevic will show more experiences and win tihs one...

GL to everybody!

Ramirez-Hidalgo over Wawrinka 1.752 - 75 units
Wawrinka just recently started to play tennis after injury and he didn't had much success. Three loses, where he only take set against Montanes in Rome and straight sets against Ferrero and even average Hartfield. Ramirez is typical claycourter but he is in poor form, so the odds are pretty high for him. Nevertheless I think that he will do best as he can on RG, he leads the Suiss 2:0 in H2H, while Wawrinka doesn't have enough matches in legs to be competitive on RG.

Berlocq over Benneteau 3.640 - 25 units
I am not impressed with the way Benneteau performs this year. Now he even became seeded because of so many fortfeits, but I really don't think that he can go as far as he went last year (1/4 final). He is overrated, Berlocq is an average player but still clay is his favourite surface and he can be very hard nut to crack when he gets the momentum. I hope this will be today.

Vemic over Tipsarevic 2.970 - 25 units
Two Sebians meeting in first round. Vemic pass the qualifications easilly, he is very underrated player, as he doesn't play much but with his big serve he is very dangerous to anyone. Tipsarevic won a challenger in Zagreb recently, but he is not a player to rely in, ver unstable, I have a feeling that sometimes he has troubles motivating himself against players who are worser than him. I think that the odds are too high for Vemic, matches between players from the same country are always unpredictable.

Meusburger over Schiavone 3.460 - 25 units

Schiavone is in bad period of form, actually it is lasting the whole year. She lost to Stosur and Azarenka recently on clay very easily, so in my opinion she is too big favourite in this match. Meusburger is solid challenger player, she can perform well on clay too (won a challenger in Latina), so her win won't be too big surprise for me.

A. Wozniak v A. Harkleroad
A. Wozniak 1.429
A. Harkleroad 3.130 = 100 units

Ashley Harkelroad is too long an underdog here.. Who the heck is Wozniak anyways? The Canadian Wozniak has only 1 GS experience, and that was this year at the Aus Open where she bowed down the first round. The American on the other hand, has a LOT of experience under her belt - a total of 15 GS appearances, four of which were at Roland Garros where she has always advanced to at least the 2nd round. Harkelroad also reached the third round during the Aus Open so her form on GS events seem better than her ranking suggests.

C. Berlocq v. J. Benneteau
C. Berlocq 3.640
J. Benneteau 1.352 = 450 units

Homecourt advantage, experience advantage, and good recent form suggests that Benneteau won't struggle early and easily advance to the next round. Julien reached the QF's last year and the QF's at the Aus open this year. He's got 5 RG appearances too and should be comfortable. Berlocq is quite young and have not advanced from the 1st round yet in any GSs.

F. Schiavone v.
Y. Meusburger 3.460
F. Schiavone 1.376 = 450 units

Francesca is ranked 28th in the world.. has 6 Roland Garros appearances- reaching the 4th round for the last 3 years. Meusburger has only 1 appearance and was eliminated first round last year. She also only played 4 matches this year and lost both.

Starace to beat Minar - 100 Units

Starace is much better on clay than Minar, he is higher ranked and has much better results recently. I think the longer this match goes on the more Starace will take control. I doubt he will drop a set.

Youzhny to beat Hernych - 50 units

Youzhny has had much better recently playing higher ranked players and has gone much deeper in this French Open than Hern over the past 4 years. Youz has a much better forehand and will dominate this match. Straight sets probably.

Don't hate, appreciate...
