Australian F1 GP might be scrapped Options

THE Australian Formula One Grand Prix is likely to be scrapped if leading teams like Ferrari walk away from the sport.

Australian F1 chief Ron Walker said there would be no point holding the Melbourne race if the most famous teams in the competition were not involved.

Walker said he would advise the Victorian Government to cancel the event should F1's leading teams carry out their threat to form a breakaway series in 2010.

He said the viability and credibility of the event would be damaged without teams like Ferrari taking part.

"The Grand Prix board would probably say to the Premier it's too hard," Walker told Fairfax Radio Network from Paris.

"You can just imagine if the likes of (Roger) Federer and other major tennis players didn't turn up to the Australian Open in January or if some of the best horses didn't come to the Melbourne Cup.

"It's the same scenario, the superstars sell tickets and if you don't have the superstars then ticket sales sag."

F1's strongest teams revived their threat to form a breakaway series yesterday despite the sport's governing body insisting a deal to end the long-running saga over regulations could be over "in the coming days".

F1's fragile peace was thrown into doubt when the Formula One Teams Association walked out of a meeting with the FIA.

It followed eight teams being told they had not been entered into the 2010 championship, and would have no say in finalising cost-cutting measures.

"We cannot sit back and wait (to see) if there will be an agreement coming our way or not," BMW Motorsport boss Mario Theissen said.

"So we have to keep all options open and that means we have to look at the other course as well.

"We are in constant negotiation and we might come to a conclusion, as the FIA indicates, in a few days.

"But it might take a few weeks. Or we might finally find out that there is no agreement. We have to prepare for all possibilities."

FIA issued a statement - titled "Setting the Record Straight" - in response to the teams' walkout in which it said that ongoing negotiations would yield a solution quickly.

Much is also likely to depend on whether FIA president Max Mosley goes back on an earlier indication to not seek re-election as head of the sport's governing body when his term expires in October.

Walker has called for Mosley to stand aside for the good of the sport.

iT should be as its boring as shit. The drivers hate melbourne as there is no atmosphere and they always have. the Australian gp has just been in idle ever since it left adelaide in what was an under handed deal to bring it away from a successful event to a city just looking for a title.

What can you say the F1 teams see how brilliant the clipsal 500 is run and the atmosphere that is created by the race organisers and they want to be apart of it.

However F1 is a dying art as its only run to profit the greedy bernie ecclestone. he currently charges each city 40 million dollars per year for a single race to be held and that is a mere appearance fee the city still has to organise the entire event. f1 is a fucked sport. bernie ecclestone is andrew demetriou on steriods simple as that. its money first and a distant second is the health of the sport.

Why would Ferrari want to produce a sub standard product, which would be judged against other products?

If they want to spend x millions on develping a car for formula 1, they should be allowed to.

As a long time F1 fan, I want to see the best cars, and the fastest cars win, not the car that can be produced the best on a budget.

Why would I watch a bunch of maiden gallopers fight it out, when I can watch a group 1 horse go around?

I hope they do walk away if the salary cap is finalised for F1.

or it could also be viewed as farrari acting like spoilt kids wanting everything their own way .. affraid of an equal playing field.

ross brawn is showing what can be done .. i think a total team budget is an excellent idea .. it will not decrease lap times as they keep slowing them down every year with new regulations anyway.

in the turbo era they smashed lap records .. then after the turbo era they still smashed lap records so speed isnt the issue.

hate f1 when its a season long proccession for one manufacturer .. let em all get by on a fixed budget and lets have some racing and over-taking .. surely you are old enough to remember when f1 used to have over-taking in it .. farrari the dictating twats.

Why does it need changing LL?

In 2008 Hamilton (McLaren) won the championship by a point from Massa (Ferrari) hardly a procession.

In 2007 Raikkonen (Ferrari), won the championship by a point from both Hamilton and Alonso (both McLaren)

In 2006 Alonso (Renault), won by 13 points from Schumacher (Ferrari).

In 2005 Alonso (Renault) defeated Raikkonen (McLaren) by 21 points.

So as you can see, the title has not been dominated by one manufacturer in the last few years, they have all had their turn at glory. I would like to see the best product out there, not a second rate product dictated by budget.

We will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

no we dont have to disagree saintly i like f1 the way it is.

but i also think a maximum expenditure per team is also a good idea .. while we are at it i think all cars should be on the same tyres and engines. ..

Good to see Webber get a win. He was looking like a perenial loser.
They should take them F1 cars around Bathurst for 100 laps. That would be interesting. WHat sort of speed would they get along Conrad straight?
