I haven't seen all the games so can't comment on all of them, but I've seen a number of matches and the umpiring seems to be getting worse. So inconsistent, one free is paid on one end, then a different umpire will let the same thing go. IMO we've had at least 2 game results that have been effected directly as a result of a bad free kick - The Richmond game (deliberate out of bounds against McGuane was paid late in the game which led to an equalising goal to St Kilda), and there was one late in the Sydney/Essendon game where a free kick was paid to Sydney in their forward 50 for pretty much nothing (sorry can't remember specifics) that resulted in a goal that put them in front with only minutes remaining. Now I know that umps generally get a bad rep, and a lot of the time its unjustified, but I would like to hear what ppl think of standards so far. Has this season been a step backwards? Is it rust in the first few rounds? Am I overreacting?

Has this season been a step backwards? Is it rust in the first few rounds? Am I overreacting? Essendon/ Sydney game was against Hardingham. Bolton goaled it. Very very stiff if paid for holding the ball, possible went for incorrect disposal. The games i watched the umps were mega hot on players either dragging the ball in or getting the ball dragged under them than not trying to get rid of the ball. Some iffy calls there

I agree it's becoming a joke. They won't let a game play and are becoming far to influential on results. Like you said Rude, that deliberate wasn't there against McGuane, he had two Saints players around him and was under enormous pressure, play that 2 meters closer to the line and the ump would of called it a point. The rule that's probably my most hated at the moment is the holding the ball rule, it's becoming impossible for players to win the ball and hold it up. I remember numerous times both Saints players and Richmond players were pinged because they were the only ones that actually went for the ball, and then were immediately tackled, having no opportunity to even think about what they were going to do with the football, and got pinged. It's unfair and makes players question actually throwing there head over the footy and trying to get it.

The Hardingham incident in the Swans/Bombers game was a joke and definitely cost Bombers the game. I heard the umpire yell holding....it wasn't for an incorrect disposal. They tolerated other players holding it for an age after being tackled. I kept waiting for the whistle which never came until the player and ball were buried. Ball up. Just want consistency. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hot Pies and Mustard

Hardingham holding the ball, thats the one I was thinking of Seb! I thought he clearly handballed in time and that decision was ridiculous. Have to agree with you guys on the holding the ball calls. It seems that they go into each season with an idea in their minds, a particular rule that they are too keen to enforce. In 09 it was the rule that you can't hold up a player after he disposes of the ball, this year its holding the ball/dragging it in. The advantage rule is all over the place. If its the players choice why are they still calling some free kicks back after the player decides to play on. And then the player doesnt even look like they want to play on (carried forward by momentum or whatever) yet the ref calls it play on. Inconsistent and terribly frustrating All we want as supporters is consistency

AFL have said the McGuane one was wrong What good is admitting it was wrong after the fact? Do Richmond get any kind of compensation as a result? No. Players are suspended when they fuck up and it is made public, is it time for umpires to face the same scrutiny?

they had plenty of chances to win the game Nah thats bullshit Smiddy... If a free kick that wasnt there puts the opposition in front with limited time remaining in the game, then it definitely did contribute to costing them the game

I'm pretty sure if the AFL see a clanger like that, that ump either sits out a week or heads to the bush, VFL or ammos - which means loss/reduce pay ^^^^^^^**************************^^^^^^^ Kochie, KT, Ken, KO ... getting it right! #weareportadelaide

They weren'y 4-5 goals in front then. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hot Pies and Mustard

Thought they were disgraceful in the showdown game last night Some ridiculous free kicks paid both ways, though overall I think Adelaide can count themselves lucky a few more times than Port.
