Sounds bizarre - what the hell happened!? He just 'fell' off a building?

Was he off his rocker or something...

Las Vegas Coroner Michael Murphy said the holidaying Port Adelaide midfielder plunged 30ft (9m) from a roof.
He said a family member had identified McCarthy's body this morning and police were continuing to interview teammates, and witnesses.
Mr Murphy said that no other person was involved in the tragedy, and that it didn't appear suspicious in nature.
He said the investigation could take weeks to establish the cause of death.

they usually have so many cameras around...they said they had one film helping them....you'd think in a place so popular there would be more evidence...even if it was in early hours....

such a waste...

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) - An Australian football player died in Las Vegas over the weekend after reportedly falling from a hotel balcony.

Port Adelaide Australian rules football player John McCarthy, 22, was found unresponsive on the south driveway of the Flamingo Hotel and Casino around 5:40 a.m. Sunday.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported that "a player" had fallen from a balcony at the Flamingo Hotel.

Keith Thomas, chief executive for McCarthy's football club reported that McCarthy "had been involved in a fatal accident."

Thomas told a news conference that it was his understanding McCarthy had fallen from a building, but said details of the accident were unclear.

McCarthy was among a group of 11 Port players who left Australia on Saturday for a vacation in the United States. According to The Australian, McCarthy was not with any of his teammates at the time of his death.

An official cause of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office.

Metro police said Monday officers responded to the 3500 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard where a subject fell and was injured. Described only as a "male subject," he was taken to University Medical Center Trauma where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Detective's from Metro's violent crimes section are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

McCarthy played in 21 matches in 2012 for Port Adelaide, which plays in the top-flight Australian Football League, according to the Associated Press.

AFL player John McCarthy was trying to jump onto a palm tree from the roof of a Las Vegas hotel when he fell three storeys to his death, an official close to the football club has confirmed.

Paul Bailey, an off-duty Victorian police officer and chaperone for Western Bulldogs players also in Vegas, today detailed McCarthy's final hours to reporters at a press conference in Las Vegas.

Flanked by Port Adelaide manager Peter Rhode, Bailey said the evidence suggests McCarthy was leaping for the palm tree when he missed and fell 9m onto the footpath below.

McCarthy is believed to have left his teammates at the Wynn casino at 4.30am Sunday and walked nearly four kilometres to the Flamingo Hotel and Casino.

He then took a lift to the fourth floor and gained access to a restricted mezzanine rooftop area.

McCarthy is believed to have then climbed down a ladder to a lower mezzanine rooftop area where staff are known to take smoking breaks.

Mr Bailey said McCarthy walked to the edge.

"We know he was disoriented at the time through some phone calls he had with his girlfriend," Mr Bailey said.

"The evidence suggests he's jumped off the wall to a palm tree. He may have been disorientated at how far the fall was, he's slipped and he's fallen to the ground."

It is also believed CCTV footage, which has not been released, supports the view that McCarthy was jumping at the palm tree when he died.

Hotel staff told Fairfax they were unable to explain how McCarthy could gain access to the roof area, which was behind a door normally locked to casino patrons.

The area, perched nine metres above the footpath, has only a 20-centimetre retaining wall.

McCarthy's teammates were not aware the young player was missing until lunchtime on Sunday, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The Clark County coroner has so far stated the circumstances of McCarthy's fall remain a mystery.

Wow... more finger pointing:

http://www.heraldsun.com...-e6frf7jo-1226473749563

Now they are complaining that it took 7 minutes to give him CPR. Yesterday the team was saying that the players were "surprised" to see drugs available in the casino. LOL surprised? What planet are these people on.

How about they man up and take a good hard look at themselves. What kind of team culture must they have where a player thinks it's acceptable behaviour to scale a building and climb down a palm tree? I wonder what spin the media would put on the story if a regular guy like you or I did the same thing.

John DID NOT scale a building ... he went outside onto the roof (a secured area) of the casino ... maybe the door then locked and he was trapped up there ... he then did a dumb thing to try and get off and it cost him his life.

RIP J-Mac.

Sure, "scale" isn't the best word but he did go through a service door which was clearly marked as such. He was not 13 years old, I'm sure he's well aware of what a casino entrance/exit looks like.

There has been no media spin ... unless you refer to stuff the journos made up.

The PAFC have released FACTS soon as they were made known to them.

The week recounted from the PAFC view ...

Quote:

Week from hell for Power following tragic news of John McCarthy's death
Jesper Fjeldstad, Sunday Mail (SA)
September 15, 2012. 9:30PM

THE Port Adelaide Football Club has endured the toughest of weeks. Jesper Fjeldstad looks at how it responded to the tragic death of John McCarthy.

IT was the phone call that Keith Thomas never thought he would have to take.

The Chief Executive of the Port Adelaide Football Club was used to crisis management. But this made the club's previous leadership turmoil irrelevant.

It was Monday morning, just on 9am, and the players were all on annual leave. Thomas's team was tidying up the loose ends of the season, while a core group continued the search for a new coach.

The phone rang, Thomas answered, and it was a Victorian police officer who said he had some bad news.

John McCarthy had fallen to his death while on a trip with 10 teammates. All hell was about to break loose.
