DRAGONS ENJOY PRE-SEASON CAMP
Wednesday, 6 January 2010

In the days leading up to the Christmas break, the Dragons NRL squad packed their bags and headed for the South Coast of New South Wales, where they took part in a two day boot camp and adventure race, in both Nowra and Batemans Bay.

The camp was a chance for Dragons players and football staff to further develop teamwork skills in a foreign environment, whilst testing fitness levels and having some fun in the process, all before breaking for the Christmas holidays.

Dragons Head Performance Director Jeremy Hickmans, said the annual camp was a fantastic way to finish the year,

“Once again the pre-season camp proved to be a very successful one, meeting the objectives of team building through adversity in a competitive environment and allowing us to set a good platform for the upcoming season.”

Hickmans said the trip was a lot of fun for all involved and included a number of highlights,

“The victory in the adventure race by the Performance Staff team, Coach Wayne Bennett capsizing his kayak and the efforts of new recruit Michael Greenfield and young Dragon Trent Merrin were some of the stand-out moments we will take away from the south coast trip.”

Dragons name strong squad for first trial against Parramatta

February 09, 2010

St George Illawarra have named a strong squad for their first NRL pre-season trial against Parramatta in Perth this Sunday.
Regular NRL first graders Darius Boyd, Ben Hornby, Ben Creagh, Jeremy Smith, Nathan Fien and Jason Nightingale will all make the trip west for the season opener.

Joining them will be new recruits Michael Greenfield and Junior Paulo, while the team will be coached by assistant Steve Price with regular boss Wayne Bennett leading the NRL All Stars team on Saturday.

Dean Young, Jarrod Saffy, Brett Morris, Neville Costigan and Michael Weyman will all miss the match with injuries while Jamie Soward and Matt Cooper will join Bennett on the Gold Coast for the All Stars match.

The Eels squad will feature New Zealand international Krisnan Inu as well as Kris Keating, Jeff Robson, Dan Mortimer and former Dragon Justin Poore.

Fantastic win here by my boys, I know there was not that many first graders playing but good signs none the less Guitar

ST GEORGE 34 EELS 20

St George Illawarra held off a spirited fightback from Parramatta to post an entertaining 34-20 victory in their NRL trial match in Perth on Sunday.

The Dragons raced out to a 16-0 lead inside 35 minutes but the Eels ran in four of the next five tries to close the gap to just two points with 13 minutes remaining.

But with the game on the line St George lifted another gear, with tries to hooker Nathan Fien and Michael Lett in the dying stages securing the six-tries-to-four win in front of 9,450 fans.

Both sides fielded a mix of first-graders and up-and-comers, with last year's Dally M Medal winner Jarryd Hayne, Nathan Hindmarsh, Fuifui Moimoi and Justin Poore missing for the Eels and Jamie Soward, Matt Cooper, Brett Morris and the suspended Beau Scott among a host of players not featuring for the Dragons.

St George were on the back foot for much of the opening 15 minutes but against the run of play last year's minor premiers struck first, with a dangerous bomb from Fien finding a running Jason Nightingale five metres from the line.

Nightingale couldn't handle the ball but Nick Emmett ran on to the spillage to open the scoring.

A neat inside pass from hooker Luke Priddis to front rower Ricky Thorby opened up the Eels' defence for the second try of the night, with Bronx Goodwin's conversion making it 10-0 after 30 minutes.

Parramatta were struggling to stem the tide and Nightingale made it 16-0 five minutes before half-time when he shook off three Eels tacklers in a 30m sprint to the line.

The Eels were lucky not to be further in arrears with Goodwin fumbling a pass with the line in sight before Lett's try was disallowed due to a forward pass.

Parramatta made the most of their double hit of good fortune, scoring on the stroke of half-time when a neat grubber kick from Kris Keating put Robson over, making it 16-4 at the break.

Eels winger Etu Uaisele closed the gap to 16-8 early in the second half and although a Jake Marketo try extended the buffer out to 22-8, Parramatta were clearly on the charge.

Their dominance of possession paid off just a minute before three-quarter time, with Kris Keating and run-on captain Feleti Mateo exchanging passes to expose the Dragons' defence.

But despite closing the gap to two points the Eels couldn't land the killer blow, with the Dragons racing in two late tries to secure victory.

"We had a few young players, I thought it was a like a furnace blast for them," Eels coach Daniel Anderson said.

"We got caught a little bit physically by the size of the Dragons but they got better as the game got on.

"We started to play with a bit more conviction and confidence. I thought we played very conservatively (in the first half).

"But in the second half they stressed the line.

"Feleti (Mateo) came on and I thought he made a big difference ... and gave us some opportunities."

St George stand-in coach Steve Price was pleased with how his team performed.

"I'm sure a lot of the senior guys get a lot of confidence out of those younger boys who got the opportunity today, especially Jake Marketo and Beau Henry and Kyle Stanley got a good opportunity out there," Price said.

"Across the board we were very pleased with the first hit-out."

Not bad early season form by the saints so far. Team looks a little rusty but i think if we can get off to a winning start tomorrow night against a team like the eels then i will be stoked!

Fan bloody tastic after that Friday night match, Been very busy this past weekend and was not able to post my thoughts after the game but by gee I'm happy! The whole team looked great and Wayne Bennett summed it up nicely with "they just did what they had to do and the rest took care of itself". Soward played awesome and congrats on him slotting over about 5 penalty shots. Dragons almost playing like a Rugby Union squad and could be hard to beat in the coming weeks.

Nice win by the saints over the roosters on ANZAC day. Its been awhile since i have posted in the den but here i am. I dont want to sound overly cocky or anything but what team can stop the dragons at the moment with the storm out of the race? Manly? Eels? Dunno

Dragons certainly are the team to beat. However, they are in a similar position as to last season, hopefully they can maintain there proffesionalism at the bussiness end of the season.

Who can beat them?

Im really warming to Manly, i like there intensity and attitude. Although they have seem to have a problem at really putting teams away, but when they do eventually click lookout!

I just cant have the Titans, but you never know, they have done nothing wrong and Monday nights win against Manly was huge

Souths could, but i doubt it.
Penrith are pretenders
Tigers have lost their bite, but i wont write them off just yet

3 teams i refuse to write off... Dogs, Eels and Broncos

All 3 teams have had problems, more so the Dogs and Broncos, massive injury tolls early on, if either of those 2 can scrape into the 8 and have a fully fit side then they are a big threat.

Eels have started the same as they did last year, they can build momentum again

Nice comments Diva

Manly do look the danger IMO. If the Eels could start of strongly they would be a force but as long as they win the games that matter come the business end of the season thats all that counts..If we choke again come finals i will be fuming!

..someone on Sunday footie show made a crack about how well the Saints are going, "but it isn't september yet.."

Once again they look almost unbeatable at this time of season...but will history repeat itself?...if they finish 1 or 2 they should win with no Storm...the problem positions are 3, 4 and 5...nearly every year at least two go early...

Boxing Dunno
