Thinking about it, there have been a lot of great womens tennis players throughout the years. These are women who would win at all costs, who could dominate you in every way, and win a match with an unbelievable shot with ease. Ive got a coulple here who could definitly be considered the greatest: Billie Jean King: She was a solid player. She could volley well and she was a great net player. She won 6 singles titles, doubles 10 times, and mixed doubles 4 times. She was a pioneer to womens sports. Steffi Graf: She had a very good game. Good serve, great off the ground, and she had the ambition to win, and win she did. She won 107 career WTA singles titles and 11 doubles titles. In '95, she became the only tennis player to win the 4 major singles titles 4 times. Unbelievable. Martina Navratilova: She was the best. She had skill that is unmatched. She could hit a great serve when she needed it. And she knew how to win. She won Wimbledon 9 times and 39 Grand Slam titles. Martina was could be call the greatest doubles player ever. These are just a few of the ladies who could be called the best. You have to weigh a lot of things on deciding who is best. So, who do you think the best womens tennis player of all time is?? Goodbye Metrodome, hello Target Field!

Has to be Navratilova. Not only was she incredibly successful (and her talent has spanned decades), but she also brought something unique to women's tennis: physicality. Before her, female players didn't often work on their strength and fitness. Therefore, they didn't have the power. I'm not a proponent of pure power--it bores me--but I do like power combined with skill. She has that, and had it even more in her prime.

Nice post Baseballnut. You have chosen some class players. For me, I have to go with Navratilova. Nine Wimbledons! That's just nuts. She also had a 74-match winning streak in 1984! Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/..._winning_streak_in_1984

I loved going through that list and seeing all the defeats of Little Miss All American, Chris Evert. The funny thing, though, was that there was a Maleeva sister on the list dating back to the'84 Wimbledon. I remember when there were like 3 or 4 of them running around on the tour. That stretched well into the '90s, if I remember correctly.

Az, she only dropped about 8 sets in those 74 matches. Now that's dominance!

Cold Dog- Navratilova was extremely dominant. She could go out there and just blow her opponent away. And a 74 match win streak! Thats crazy. Thats just proof of how good she really was. Goodbye Metrodome, hello Target Field!

something to consider is the strength in depth of the other players when you are at the top...

I agree with the majority, Navaratilova was just amazing and she lived and breathed tennis. For the generation she was she changed the game, dominated nearly every tournament, had no weaknesses and was the best volleyer I have seen in the womens game. Second on my list would be Graf, she brought a different part to the Womens game, in some ways she brought the power game to the sport and also a new physical presence. great forehand, and unlike Martina she had a weakness in her backhand. But she learnt throught the years to improve on that - that is what makes her a great player.

"Zayd"something to consider is the strength in depth of the other players when you are at the top... I see your point, Zayd. At the time, there weren't many players with the kind of talent or skill to challenge Martina. However, I also think it's unfair to handicap a great player merely because she didn't have anyone in her league. For example, I don't think Graf had much competition, either--especially after Seles was stabbed. It's been a general knock on Hingis that she wasn't challenged when she was at the top of her game. Well, the Williams sisters could have played the junior circuit and been ready to challenge her, but chose not to. That's their loss, not hers. On the men's side, the fact that Sampras has the most GS titles has been questioned because of the fucked-up rules keeping pros out of the GS tournaments for so long. If you weren't independently wealthy, you couldn't afford to stay amateur for as long as necessary to rack up those wins. Still, Sampras is one of the greats of the game. I'm not sure he should be criticized for something out of his control. All he could worry about was his own game. He's not my favorite player by a long way, but I think he was pretty amazing on the court.

Huh? Dude, I'm not trying to be a bitch here, but the bordering-on-homophobia thing doesn't sit well with me. Let's dispense with that in future, okay? I know you're joking around, so I'm not going to make a big deal about it, but it kind of makes me uncomfortable.
My favorite player in the world is Hingis, but she made a similar joke about Mauresmo that is the only thing I've ever objected to out of her mouth.

"chadjaja"Margarat Court just to be difficult The pioneer Well, she was a great player. She won a record 62 Grand Slam titles. That number really sticks out at you and makes you think she's gotta be one of the best. Not the best, but one of the best. Goodbye Metrodome, hello Target Field!

1)Steffi Graf: every seles fan pointout about stabbing, but they forgot how seles come to no.1 place.i mean at that time steffi suffred a lot from her dad problems. she lost french, wimbledon to others only because of these problems and once she said that "i can't fight as usual".and she said this not after 93 or stabbing. and seles'best is year 91 and there steffi beats seles in all two matches. *8 times wta champion for year. *7 times ITF world champion. *22 slams at age 30. *7wimbledons at age 27 *beats top-3 players in a row in a tournamenet(99 fo) *she beats budding venus in wim-Q.F 99,even she suffers from wrist injury. *also has record that she beats top-4 players in a week time. *won 6slams consecutively. *martina hold 86-1 record for one year only, but graf 86-2 record in 89,and similar in 88too. .... 2)Martina Navratilova: If there is no steffi, then i vote her as top player. and i agree if you includes doubles too. but steffi is best in singles. 3)Helen Wills Moody 4)Billie Jean King 5)Margaret Court 6)Chris Evert 7)Monica Seles 8)Justin Henin 9)Martina Hingis 10)Williams

Court and Graf hold the advantage in terms of numbers, but the numbers are not always a clear indiation. Graf is a champion and I was always on her side in any match she played against Seles, but I will admit at the time of the Seles stabbing, she had a stranglehold on the womens game. Steffi was clearly number 2 at that stage, and certainly had a fight on her hands if she was going to get the top spot back from Seles. From January 1991 through February 1993, Seles won 22 titles and reached 33 finals out of the 34 tournaments she played. She compiled a 159–12 win-loss record (92.9% winning percentage), including a 55–1 win-loss record in Grand Slam tournaments. In the broader context of her first four years on the circuit (1989–1992), Seles had a win-loss record of 231–25 (90.2% winning percentage) and collected 30 titles. The stabbing robbed Seles of many more titles, and gifted a few to Graf IMO. So with that being the case I have both Court and Graf in front ever so slightly of Natratilova, with Seles being the unluckiest player of them all. She never came back from that incident with the same confidence, or fitness levels with which she left the game as a dominant force. But it is just an opinion. Cheers. Navratilova did not revolutionise women's tennis...Billy Jean King did. If not for her women's tennis would have not progressed to the present high level. SHE WAS NAVRATILOVA'S MENTOR! Give credit where it is due. The greatest woman tennis player (and I have actually seen them all since 1960) is Margaret Court...on actual tennis prowess. Mentally she was inferior to B.J.King and Martina, but physically she would beat them all with one hand (no double backhands). Martina and B.J. equal 2nd. Both ruthless competitors with longevity accentuating their statistics. Margaret never played as long, having children. Evonne Cawley and Maria Bueno the most fluent. Monica Seles could have been anything. Her mental stability taken away (though the piggy grunting wasn.t missed) More talented than physically-superior Graf NO QUESTION WITH MEN: ROD LAVER!!! Even Fed acknowledges that. Sampras was simply physical. Laver would have made a fool of him. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hot Pies and Mustard

THESE ARE NOT MERELY MY OPINIONS. THE TENNIS PLAYERS THEMSELVES THINK MARGARET AND ROD WERE THE GREATEST. ONLY B.J. WOULDN'T AGREE WITH MARGARET...HER CHIEF COMPETITION. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hot Pies and Mustard

POST SCRIPT: If Margaret and Rod had the tennis racquets they use today it would be pulverisation! They were the greatest net players. Putting away lobs would have been bullets from them!!! ASK THAT OTHER TENNIS *GREAT*, McENROE, WHO WAS THE GREATEST...HE WOULD SAY *LAVER, NO DOUBT.* sampras deserves lower case. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hot Pies and Mustard
