Is poker sport at all, or it's just a gambling game? Options

its strange if you think about it, there are some games that seem to blur the definition of sport..
If Chess is a sport, a game of strategy and intellect, then what about something like scrabble, would it also be classified as a sport?
After playing tens of thousands of games online and on mobile (words with friends), I can safely say that there is a huge amount of strategy involved.
I would say that poker falls under the same category. There is some amount of luck involved, but you could also argue that everything in poker is based on calculated risks, as well as learning the way that your opponents will play.
You can compare this to something like boxing, where you could say that each fighter also takes calculated risks, as well as studying how their opponent will fight.
The other area that seems to blur the line of sport vs game, is that most people would think of sports as a physical activity. This element is missing from things like chess and poker.

Interesting topic for your first post.. and could get some interesting discussion going - I just hope that it isn't an introductory post laying the groundwork for some spam, because the link in ur WWW has me worried, please prove me wrong though Thumbs up
But either way, welcome to the forum Welcome Mr. Green

I've played a fiar bit of online poker in the past but would not call it a sport, its more like a hobby and I just love getting the adrenaline rush of playing in a big hand and taking a pot.

I reckon it depends on each individual and how they play the game, 1 of my mates is a professional poker player and he would prob call it a job rather than a sport. Think it only falls into those 2 categories, hobby and job, why else would you play it?

Poker is far from a sport. All you have to do is look at the slobs who play it. It's a game, a bloody card game, and that's it.

There are actually professional farters in the world, I'm not kidding. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatulist. Should we call farting a sport too?

lol cd, heaps of others have fatties too though Very Happy
I mean, if you look at the professional darts players, tenpin bowlers, shooters, you can often find dudes in those ones that could fit in at a poker table unnoticed Laughing
If the definition of sport has something to do with being a physical activity, then where do you draw the line at what is a sport and what isn't?
I mean if you look at the following progressively: Chess -> Poker -> billiards -> tenpin bowling -> darts -> archery -> shooting -> motor sports -> horse racing -> baseball -> basketball -> boxing, at which point do you draw the line that it can be classified as a sport rather than a game?

Easy, you draw the line at poker. Billiards involves some physical skill, you need to have hand-eye coordination, balance, steady hand etc. Chess and poker are games that can be played with a mouse. Now settle down.

We could say for any sport that it is a hobby or job, hobby if you play it because of adrenalin, good feeling etc. and job if you play it professionally, basketball for example.

But for the basketball we couldn't say it's a gambling game. Is poker or not?

Poker fits all except sport. Not a sport.

Definitions

Sport: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

Hobby: An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.

Game: An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime

Job: A regular activity performed in exchange for payment, especially as one's trade, occupation, or profession

lol ok going by that, chess and poker are not sports.
But why do they say, chess is the sport of kings? Mr. Green
Also, chess is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee.

I've always considered strip poker to be a sport!!!

Texas hold-em could be construed as a sport taken literally...

nothing jujuno.

i was just passing a comment on the most pornographic sport.
i mean why else would anyone watch it.

sport is physical based, the rest are hobbies or games, darts snooker shooting all games or hobbies not sports.

sure their games of hand and eye co-ordination but just games.

sports are about physical endurance and stamina.

anything that doesnt involve those 2 ingredients are just games or hobbies mis-labelled.

Poker is the card game that involves betting and individualistic play. This game is usually considered in gambling game.
But according to me, in this game players are to play with different strategies and some set of rules as equal to the sports. So, it must considered in Sport.
