AB's Match Report All Blacks hold off Irish assault 10/06/2006 Sportal.co.nz
Ireland provided some worrying moments for 70 minutes of the first Test but the All Blacks finally triumphed to win 34-23 at Hamilton's Waikato Stadium.
It was a tough, torrid affair with superb Irish tackling matching their promised attack but it was the failure to seize chances that again cost Ireland its chance of a first victory over the All Blacks.
In their last match in Dublin in November, the Irish were unable to capitalise on line breaks and the same occurred again.
Poor lineout liaison made life difficult for New Zealand's attempts to secure phase possession initially.
Another contributing factor to the stilted attack was the firing of unnecessary passes, several of which were intercepted by the Irish.
The All Blacks backs continued to try to bust their way through with fullback Mils Muliaina and centre Ma'a Nonu, especially, several times held in strong Irish tackles.
But in the end, the All Blacks' superior stamina wore the Irish down.
The All Blacks hit the game running and attacked from the kick-off.
After only one minute Muliaina broke the Irish backline defence and raced into space. It was obvious the try scoring chance was on as only fullback Geordan Murphy was in position to offer any chance. But with support on either side, Muliaina passed out to second five-eighths Aaron Mauger .
Mauger didn't have the speed to clear out, and passed wide to right wing Doug Howlett, who ground the ball in a despairing tackle in the corner.
The All Blacks were unable to control a lineout take they stole from Ireland and from the lineout the Irish did better at the second attempt.
The ball was spun wide with second five-eighths Gordon D'Arcy feeding a long pass to captain and centre Brian O'Driscoll who raced into space to score.
O'Gara added the conversion and four minutes later added a penalty goal to take Ireland to a 10-5 lead.
Penalty goals, one by first five-eighths Luke McAlister after 21 minutes, and to O'Gara after 30 minutes advanced the score to 13-8.
All Blacks captain Richie McCaw was penalised just before the break for not rolling away in the tackle and O'Gara landed the goal from 37 metres out.
The All Blacks started superbly in the second half when from a scrum McAlister popped the ball to wing \\Joe Rokocoko coming off the left wing. He passed to Nonu who fed Mauger and Muliaina was able to score. McAlister added the conversion.
Nine minutes into the half, the Irish made the most of some muddled All Blacks play on defence with O'Gara freeing ball in front of the posts and popping a pass to left wing Andrew Trimble who scored. O'Gara's conversion gave Ireland an eight-point cushion.
McAlister pulled back three points, 16 minutes into the half, with a penalty goal.
From the kick-off the first real All Blacks driving maul drove Ireland back and when the ball was fed to the backs, flanker David Wallace was penalised for not rolling away in his tackle of Howlett and McAlister goaled from 48m.
Some powerful drives by the All Blacks fully tested the Irish defence and play carried towards the line where a penalty provided McAlister with another penalty goal for the All Blacks to finally reclaim the lead.
After play ranged back and forward with intercepts to both sides, it was lock Paul O'Connell's knock on of a bouncing ball from an Irish chip ahead, that provided Nonu with an opening which he used to feed replacement lock Troy Flavell in for his try.
McAlister's conversion gave New Zealand an eight-point lead and the home team stormed back onto attack to finish the game camped on the Irish line.
Scorers:
New Zealand 34 (Doug Howlett, Mils Muliana, Troy Flavell tries; Luke McAlister 2con, 5 pen)
Ireland 23 (Brian O'Driscoll, Andrew Trimble tries; Ronan O'Gara 2 con, 3pen).
HT: 16-8

"http://www.allblacks.com"Ireland will take an unchanged team into Saturday's second Test against the All Blacks at Eden Park.
Coach Eddie O'Sullivan said he was confident the same side who pushed New Zealand close, before losing the first test 23-34 in Hamilton, could go one step better in Auckland.
Just six reserves have been named as a question mark surrounds the fitness of starting fullback Geordan Murphy. The last reserve spot won't be named until Murphy's status is confirmed.
Team: Geordan Murphy, Shane Horgan, Brian O'Driscoll (captain), Gordon D'Arcy, Andrew Trimble, Ronan O'Gara, Peter Stringer, Denis Leamy, David Wallace, Neil Best, Paul O'Connell, Donncha O'Callaghan, John Hayes, Jerry Flannery, Marcus Horan.
Reserves: Rory Best, Bryan Young, Mick O'Driscoll, Keith Gleeson, Isaac Boss, Girvan Dempsey, one to be named. I think this shows great confidence in the Irish players who, IMO, put on a great show and had a great game (except for losing) against the AB's last saturday. so what's the pick for this week? as a kiwi living in ireland i can tell you they're all fairly gutted to miss last weeks game, probably best chance they'll get in a while. i'm thinking the all blacks should come back with a vengeance and will probably win it by about 26 points, will be interesting to see the spread with the bookies.
ps how do i change my avatar so it doesn't say eddie the eagle?

Soperman welcome to the 121 family Unfortunetly the "Eddie the Eagle" stays with you until you do a few more posts. It's a name given to you by random depending on the number posts you make. The current odds from Betfair for the games this week are: NZ 1.09 vs Ire 10.5 Australia 1.13 vs England 8.2 Argentina 1.3 vs Wales 3.05 Sth Africa 1.06 vs Scotland 10.5 As you can see all the home teams are huge odds on favourites, so I certainly won't be risking my dough at those odds. However I thought the kiwis were pretty lucky to come away with the win last Saturday. Nothing convincing about their performance. However I agree with you they will bounce back and I can't see Ireland beating them at home. From what I read the All Blacks are making three changes. This is lineup for Saturday: All Blacks: 15. Mils Muliaina, 14. Doug Howlett, 13. Casey Laulala, 12. Aaron Mauger, 11. Joe Rokocoko, 10. Luke McAlister, 9. Byron Kelleher, 8. Rodney So'oialo, 7. Richie McCaw, 6. Jerome Kaino, 5.Troy Flavell, 4. Chris Jack, 3. Carl Hayman, 2. Keven Mealamu, 1. Clarke Dermody. Res: 16. Andrew Hore, 17. Neemia Tialata, 18. Greg Rawlinson, 19. Craig Newby, 20. Jimmy Cowan, 21. David Hill, 22. Ma'a Nonu At the end of the day the Tri Nations is the real focus and a bit of shipping and changing will happen. Ma'a Nonu has come for a bit of critisism with some of his errors on Saturday. Ireland on the other hand have remained unchanged. Some people are masters of money, and some its slaves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiO6cK4XUuI

thanks barney! i've now graduated to eric the eel so i'm well on way to the giddy heights of shane philpott soon. (worst all black ever!) i'm more interested in trying to beat the bookies spread as i reckon they always struggle to get margin right. wanted to back ireland to come within 16 points of nz last week but the sh*te betting site i'm connected with had closed off that option . am interested in bet fair but am a bit intimidated, think i need more research on it before going at it. there's another site called bet dax which is apparently similar, any thoughts?

soperman don't be discourgaed by the betting exchanges they are easy to use. just simply look at what is on offer on the "back" and then you can make a bet for that price. www.betfair.com is the leading exchange the other exchange your talking about is www.betdaq.com which is based in Ireland Dublin suprisingly. Both are fine and probably best to look for the better odds what is on offer. As for the Rugby I myself play margins for value as well, neither exchange has market for this but Centerbet www.centrebet.com offer 17.5 handicap for Ireland. Given the closeness of the first game I will probably go Ireland here again. They are have a market for Australia vs England with England a 16.5 start. The way Australia finished the last game I think that Australia will beat the margin in this. England for mine are just too inexperience side. I was looking at the handicap & winning margin prices for Ireland Currently it is at: Ireland 7.5+ is @ 3.0 Ireland 17.5+ is @ evens ireland 27.5+ is @ 1.05 I think that the 17.5+ is reasonable value as I think that the NZ team was a little embrassed at the start of the 1st test. even thought the Irish played very well and deserved the lead. Winning margin prices:NZ under 12.5 is @ 2.62 NZ over 12.5 is @ 1.18 Ireland Under 12.5 is @ 7.4 Ireland over 12.5 is @ 17.5 Draw is @ 30 PS soperman which NZ Super14 franchise do you support? There are 10 kinds of people in the world: Those who understand binary and those who don't... i've lived in a lot of different parts of nz but the most time was spent in whangarei, hence i support northland, which unfortunately means i have to support the blues. not too impressed with them this season. bring back buck.
lived in hurricanes territory for a while, really enjoyed watching them play a couple of times and would be my backup team. they were a bit unlucky this year, although the crusaders are machines.
where did you get your logo? don't really want a blues one but thought i might get an all black one for a while
nz will be on the huge mission to show they're still class this week and for sure the irish are good but with a few more practices under their belt and a proper blindside playing i think we should do it by 20 or more. looking at your odds is there anywhere that pays for nz -27 points. must be paying a bit if the reverse is so low.

The logo I copied, then removed the background, then resized it. I might see if I can get a find a AB's for the RWC next year. Plenty of time though. Check out www.oddschecker.com for current odds at bookies and exchanges (although some are missing link must be wrong so the prices are not show). Hi all,
Does anyone know any good bets for this match, thinking off going for the handicap of -11 points New Zealand - what do you all think?

I think that NZ -11 is not a good bet. I think that the score line will be greater than that. Im looking at NZ -17 @ 1.81 and I will be putting my money there. I have also seen NZ-27 @ 3.2 but I think this might be a little bit high but I might stick a seenky tenner there just in case. PS. Like the new avatar Welshy. i would say the all blacks -11 would be fairly sure bet, can't imagine odds are that great though, you snuck in a close one on the last game, so will leave the betting to you. i think us kiwis get a bit blinded by patriotism (arrogance?!), had a mate over here who dropped a hundy on nz winning by 50 or more in last game, one of the dumber bets i've heard of. still reckon nz by at least 20 in this game though. good luck to you.

"http://www.allblacks.com/"Henry happy with series win
Ireland might have been beaten 2-0 by New Zealand after losing the second Test 27-17 at Eden Park, but All Blacks coach Graham Henry sent them on their way with a message that they are still capable of beating Australia.
He said winning was down to self-belief and Ireland had played two competitive Test matches and there was no reason why it couldn't beat Australia next week in Perth.
Henry was delighted with the attitude of the All Blacks although they were guilty of playing too much rugby at times rather pinning the corners.
"To beat a very good Irish side 2-0, I'm delighted with the guys and what they have done. I think now we appreciate they [Ireland] are a good side, maybe we hadn't appreciated that before. They are a very good rugby side, they defend exceptionally well and have got some very talented players. So for this group of players to come through and win the series is great," he said.
"When we play in these conditions we probably need to get the balance a little better and play the corners more," he said.
Henry admitted that a vital try scored by prop Clarke Dermody had a high amount of probability about a knock on by lock Chris Jack in the immediate build-up to the try.
It took New Zealand out to a 17-0 lead, but the Irish responded soon after and got back to 20-14 at half-time.
Of the Irish players he felt lock Paul O'Connell was outstanding.
Captain Richie McCaw said conditions were slippery but early in the game the All Blacks had played some good rugby, especially considering the conditions.
"In the second half we attempted to play a bit of field position but the ball was squirting around all over the show. It was difficult," he said.
"When we kicking downfield we wanted to keep it in and put them under pressure," he said but there were problems in pinning Ireland in its own territory only to lose ground by conceding penalties.
He said the decision to push for a try in the 70th minute was made because the pack felt like they had the wood on the Irish.
"We were wearing them down at scrum after scrum, although I was quite relieved when I saw Luke [McAlister] go under the sticks," he said.
"We felt if we could wear them down scrum after scrum the points would come, which they did. We could have taken the points but you have got to back yourself sometimes in those situations, the boys were all keen to do that so we had a crack and just as well it paid off.
Forwards coach Steve Hansen said: "One thing we have to understand about the All Blacks is that they want to play a 15-man game, they are very good at it, and it is not often they have to play in conditions like that.
"It is a good learning curve for us but at the same time we have some great athletes who want to have a go, you don't want to inhibit that," he said.
Hansen said new loosehead prop Dermody had played well, had scrummed well and had got around the park and done his job. "He's played two good Tests and he's fitted in very, very well and has got to be considered."
Backs coach Wayne Smith said he was happy with centre Casey Laulala's effort, especially his 100 percent effort in tackling. Really happy about the AB's win. Also happy that the Irish will probably have a really competitive pack for RWC next year. There are 10 kinds of people in the world: Those who understand binary and those who don't...
